About the Walk

Step into the living heritage of Pulau Ubin through the Malay KamPUng Heritage Walk, a descendant-led journey that brings you into the heart of Singapore's last surviving Malay village.

This walk is specially curated and guided by Syazwan—or Wan—a direct descendant of the Ubin Orang Pulau—the Malay islander community that once called Ubin home, through his maternal lineage.

This 2.5 hour guided walk covers approximately 5 kilometres, gently taking you through Ketuk Batu (Pekan Ubin), Kampung Sungei Durian and the former Kampung Surau—places that continue to hold deep meaning for the Ubin Orang Pulau.

Grounded in lived cultural and natural heritage, as well as personal memory, this experience invites you to reconnect stories with place, weaving together history and landscape in a way that reflects and honours the cultural identity of the Ubin Orang Pulau.

About the Guide

Nor Syazwan Bin Abdul Majid—or Wan—is a descendant of the Ubin Orang Pulau—the Malay islander community on Pulau Ubin, Singapore, through his maternal lineage. Raised on stories by his mother and elders, he developed a deep personal connection to the island's history, culture, and identity. In 2018, he founded Wan's Ubin Journal, a blog-turned social platform dedicated to honouring and remembering his roots.

Wan graduated from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) in 2025 with a Bachelor's (Honours) in Social Work and minor in Sociology—a foundation that strengthens his respect for community voice and intergenerational memory. He later obtained his Singapore Tourism Board Tourist Guide Licence (#6407), enabling him to formally share his heritage with visitors while honouring the community he comes from.

His dedication to heritage preservation has earned national recognition. Wan is a Finalist for the President's Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards 2025 (People of Good—Open Category) and a recipient of the SUSS Spirit Award 2024 for his continuous work with the Ubin Orang Pulau community.

Wan is deeply excited to walk with you along the same paths his ancestors once travelled—reconnecting memory with place and offering rare, heartfelt insights into the living spirit of Pulau Ubin.

This heritage walk is also more than a guided experience—it reflects Wan's responsibility as a cultural steward and his commitment to giving back, shaped by the values he holds through his faith.

To honour both the Ubin Orang Pulau heritage and the wider community:

— Anonymous

I feel incredibly inspired by Wan’s desire to find out more about his heritage (and also preserve it). Growing up I’ve always been apathetic about who I am and where my grandparents, ancestors, etc. came from and now that I’m older, I feel this very strong desire to try and reconnect and find out more about my heritage; Wan really inspired me to reconnect with my roots

—Anonymous

Wan is very detailed and passionate in delivering his knowledge and experiences of Pulau Ubin. At the end of the tour, I had better knowledge of Ubin and its past compared to my previous visits

Anonymous

Wan is a lovely guide and shared many stories close to his heart; it was clear that this was prepared with much time and effort
