Had a fun time storytelling to children and their families at the Central Public Library earlier today as part of the National Library Board's Early Read Fiesta 2024!
This is actually my second session—the first one was held at the Tampines Regional Library about a month ago on 26 October (unfortunately no photos were taken then!)
In both sessions, I shared with the kids stories about my mom's life growing up on Pulau Ubin, which includes tales of fishing, farming and foraging. And of course, how can we forget talking about the Legend of Pulau Ubin (and finding the cute animal photos to capture their attention). After the storytelling session, we had some games, particularly congkak, to foster some intergenerational bonding. It was heartwarming to see all of them playing together, and there was also a parent who quickly hopped onto Shopee or Lazada to search for one that they could order and play at home together, how cute!
Truthfully, I rarely had the chance to speak with children—and given how I've been sharing and talking to pretty much adults all these years—it genuinely was fun having to code switch some big words into more understandable ones for the kids. That also meant having to share some jokes that would help keep the parents entertained too hehe!
I'm touched to learn that the session had been quite an enjoyable one for the families, and I thank them for spending their time with me. I'd also like to thank the NLB team for inviting me to be a part of the NLB ERF 2024, and the on-site volunteers for their assistance in setting up the place. Thank you!
