What if I build a kampung house on Minecraft instead? It should be easy, right? There won't be any regulations that could restrict me from doing that, right?

In 2025, there were nine recorded deaths within the Ubin Orang Pulau community—making it the year with the second-highest number of deaths since systematic documentation of passings began in 2020.

We remember those who left us.

Hj. Ahamad Bin Kassim passed away last Saturday, on December 13th, 2025, aged 90.

To most, he was known as Pak Ahmad—the pakcik who sold coconuts and cold drinks at his stall. To me, he was Tok Mat—a dear neighbour and family friend and a grandfather in my own grandfather's absence.

This is my memory of Tok Mat—a gem that Pulau Ubin has now lost forever.

Today I celebrate the end of my four-year academic journey at SUSS, but more than anything, I celebrate my parents.

I celebrate my dad, who is illiterate, and has spent the past five decades of his life as a cleaner to provide for our family. I celebrate my mom, who only completed primary education at the Sekolah Melayu Pulau Ubin, and has spent her life raising her children at home. It is with their love, prayers, sacrifices and set of noble values that this son of theirs was able to pursue a higher education and graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours). Thus, I dedicate my degree solely to them.

To the best of my knowledge as well, I am the first among Awang Minyak's grandchildren to be conferred a degree in a local university. I now join a growing list of descendants of the Ubin Orang Pulau who have attained a higher education. Moving forward, I shall hold firmly to the Malay proverb:

"Jadilah seperti padi, makin berisi makin rendah. Jangan seperti lalang, makin lama makin tinggi."

"Be like the rice stalk—the more it ripens, the lower it bows; don't be like the wild grass—the older it grows the taller it stands."

With this newly found academic achievement, of which God has blessed me with, I hope to make my family and community proud and to be a valuable member of society.

"Kalau tinggi, untung jadi bintang; kalau rendah, masih jadi intan"

Alhamdulillah, I am humbled to be named a finalist in the President's Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards (PVPA) 2025, under the People of Good (Open) category.

I am heartened that my contributions to the Ubin Orang Pulau community—particularly through the @ambin.ubin project—have been recognised by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and considered for such a prestigious national award, among more than 400 nominees. This recognition motivates me to continue my heartwork in keeping our Ubin Orang Pulau identity alive and relevant today.

My sincere thanks to SUSS for nominating me for the PVPA, to the judging committee convened by NVPC for their time and thoughtful consideration, and to all of you who have believed in and supported me throughout my giving journey over the years.

My heartiest congratulations to the winners and fellow finalists, whose unwavering dedication and passion for giving back to their communities serve as an inspiration to us all. I hope this serves as a gentle reminder that each of us, in our own ways, regardless of age and background, can contribute to a more caring and compassionate Singapore—one where the kampung spirit continues to guide us toward being a City of Good, together.

Had a cosy storytelling session with some wonderful folks last Friday night (22 Aug) at the Central Public Library as part of All Things Singapore 2025!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A session we had after the talk and I'm heartened to receive much commendation from the participants as they learned more about @ambin.ubin and our efforts in giving the Ubin Orang Pulau community a platform to keep our islander stories and cultural practises alive.

Last Saturday, I did my first-ever cooking demonstration in my life in front of a live audience to finally answer the age-old question: Can Wan cook or is Wan cooked? It was fun and nerve-wracking having to cook by my mom's side as I learned and carried on my family's heritage through our Betik & Kepah Masak Lemak (Papaya & Clam Coconut Stew) recipe. Special thanks to @kebon.dapor for hosting and to everyone who joined us for allowing us to share our family recipe with you!

I'd like to thank Hwa Chong Institution for having me today! I was invited to give a talk on the Ubin Malay identity as part of the school's SG60 National Day and Racial Harmony Day celebrations. This was also my largest live audience to date—close to 400 Secondary 3 boys and their teachers—so you could imagine my stage fright!

A special shout-out to Mr Daniel as well, who extended the invite and hosted me for the morning celebrations. We met earlier at the MPP Active Citizenry Forum a while ago at the school across the street, Nanyang Girls' High School.

In all, I hope my sharing has educated and inspired our boys a little more on the Malay culture as we celebrate our multiracial nation's 60th birthday, together. Have a wonderful red-and-white weekend ahead and Happy National Day, Singapore!

My mom was asked, "Do you hope to pass down all these traditional recipes?" In which she replied, "I don't know if the younger ones are still interested in our heritage—"

I'm sorry. This year's Malay kampung heritage tour felt especially heavy for me to carry out—so much so that I often found myself breaking into tears toward the end of the tour.

WUJ was proud to be one of the many community booths set up in celebrating Hari Orang Pulau on the 14th of June. This inaugural festival—through the hard (and heart!) work of @oranglautsg —is a celebration of Singapore's Orang Pulau and Orang Laut communities—whose indigenous histories, skills, stories, and knowledge were on full display at the various booths, performances, talks and workshops held at West Coast Park, a coast which holds a very special, important and valuable place for Singapore's Southern Islander communities.

Hari Orang Pulau also goes beyond celebration. It is a reflection of the ongoing advocacy by the Orang Pulau and Orang Laut communities and their descendants, in reclaiming the narratives of their ancestral islands. It was an opportunity for us as Singaporeans to reflect on our shared maritime history, and in also recognising the cultural significance of our islander communities in Singapore.

Indeed, Singapore is not just an island nation. It is a nation of islands; some of which have been inhabited and on them, unique cultures and traditions which have shaped, and shall continue to shape, our diverse multicultural landscape here.

Congratulations once again to Firdaus and his team for a successful and historic moment in Singapore's history, and for our shared Orang Pulau heritage!

On 3rd June 2025, I had a wonderful time sharing with students from both National University of Singapore (NUS) and University of British Columbia (UBC), which is based in Vancouver, Canada.

They are having a summer exposition programme together under NUS Cities, where they would travel between Singapore and Vancouver to learn more about urban planning within the two cities, with their key focus on living with water. My sharing helped to shed light on the sustainable practices of the Ubin Orang Pulau and our relationship with the seas around us.

I will not forget the warmth I received toward the end of my sharing, where staff and students expressed their gratitude and sincere encouragement for the work that I've been doing; especially our Canadian friends—who resonated deeply and drew some parallels on the lived experiences of their indigenous peoples with ours.

I thank Rosita and @nuscities for giving me this opportunity to share our Ubin identity with them. I wish the students every success in their academic and professional endeavours, and may the knowledge they acquire inspire them to plan toward a more equitable society.

I humbly urge the Singapore government to approach the modernisation of Pulau Ubin with care, sensitivity, and respect—and to include us meaningfully in shaping the future of our ancestral island home.

I wish to thank you for believing in me and in the heart work I’ve done for the Ubin Orang Pulau community during your tenure as Minister for National Development. I vividly remember the first time we met on Ubin Day 2018, when you and Minister Chan Chun Sing visited the booth set up by the Singapore Heritage Society, which showcased my journey in tracing my grandparents' kampung house. I was (and still am) a little embarrassed that I left your hand hanging when you reached out for a handshake—oops.

Since then, you invited me to join the Friends of Ubin Network (FUN), where I felt my ideas and input on celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Pulau Ubin were heard, recognised, and appreciated—such as in the Pesta Raya@Ubin 2019 celebrations and our ongoing "Ambin Ubin" sociocultural community space in the Malay kampung. Your invitation paved the way for me to grow and develop into a more capable Singaporean, better able to serve my community.

Through the many discussions, engagements (and selfies) we’ve shared, I’ve come to sense your deep dedication and passion for our kampungs, their people, and their culture—even as Singapore continues its necessary path of urbanisation. You saw the intangible value in preserving them, and that’s something I’m truly grateful for. Your leadership has inspired me—and many others—and I’m confident it will continue to do so as you take on your new role and responsibilities as Minister for Education.

Congratulations, Sir, and I wish you the very best in your future endeavours. You will be dearly missed.

Alhamdulillah, I balik kampung with my mom to celebrate Raya together with the Ubin Orang Pulau folks who were around yesterday. It was also my first trip to Ubin this year—given how immensely busy my final semester in uni has been, so Raya-ing on Ubin was a much needed respite and another way to celebrate the end of my studies as an undergraduate! Selamat Hari Raya Maaf Zahir Batin from the Ubin Orang Pulau to you!

I'd like to thank Dr Zeehan of the NUS Department of Biological Sciences (@nus_dbs) for having me deliver a talk with her students as part of their "Saltwater: Society and the Sea" module earlier this afternoon!

I shared about the Ubin Orang Pulau identity and the relationship of the community with the sea, through stories and practices—such as fishing and foraging. I hope the students had an insightful time and may the sharing be beneficial to them in understanding our role as a society with the seas around us!

(And yes, I was in my baju Melayu (by @gangsa.co)—because Raya is one month long and also, I just submitted my thesis, so a little #ootd to celebrate the occasion hehe. Alhamdulillah for the last milestone of uni life, one more exam left to clear next week and I may potentially graduate this semester, God Willing!)

After 4 years attending classes in uni, I celebrated my last class yesterday by wearing my favourite blue baju Melayu and floral kain samping (as it was also the 2nd day of Raya!)

Though I still have assignments and a thesis to submit, and an exam to clear within the next fortnight, it feels bittersweet knowing that my tenure as an SUSS undergraduate may soon end—should I pass my final semester, God Willing. Nonetheless, I wish to thank my lecturers and the peers that I've made over the years for their guidance and countless support in my academic journey.

I ask Allah SWT to ease me in finishing my tasks over the next two weeks, and to guide this descendant of an Ubin Orang Pulau in what the future holds for me.

After 1.5 hours of weaving, Mak from the Ketupat Pasar Party (KPP) is elected, securing her third term with 57% of total ketupats weaved.

The KE25 campaign concludes with Weaving Day tomorrow (30 Mar). Tomorrow's results will determine if the Ketupat Pasar Party (KPP) secures a third term or if the Ketupat Bawang Party (KBP) is able to end the five decade streak of pasar dominance.

God Willing, KE25 will be covered 'live' tomorrow on IG from 7am SGT until the announcement of election results. We wish the best to both candidates on what has been expected as a 'fiercely lepak' ketupat election.

Both KBP and KPP candidates took to the stage for the KE25 Debate on Wed, 19 Mar at 12pm. Wan and Mak were asked to share their experience, the importance of choice of ketupat and in weaving ketupat in an era of instant ketupat in plastic sachets. Who will you be weaving for after this debate?

The "azan'—Muslim call to prayer—is made five times a day to inform Muslims to perform their five daily obligatory prayers: Subuh/Fajr (pre-dawn), Zuhur (noon), Asar (late afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isyak (night).

In the past, before the azan was called, mosques around Singapore would first beat the "beduk" (large drum) to indicate the prayer times. Today, the azan is called indoors in mosques, with the exception of Sultan Mosque which is the only mosque permitted to call the azan through loudspeakers in Singapore. Additionally, the azan is also broadcast over radio on Warna 94.2FM.

I also perform the azan at the end of my heritage hikes at the former site of the Pulau Ubin Mosque to invite participants to immerse themselves in what would have been a soundscape of the expunged Kampung Surau.

Over the weekend, I saw my mom cutting a fish I have not quite seen before. Turns out it was called Ikan Talang—Queenfish/Leatherjacket, and she spontaneously talked about how this fish was given to my grandfather by Tok Weh when he went fishing. Also, it turns out that you could get 'panau' if you didn't know that you're allergic to it!

Both the Ketupat Bawang Party (KBP) and Ketupat Pasar Party (KPP) revealed their campaign posters today (5 Mar), officially kicking off the race to become this year's top ketupat weaver. The campaign season will last until Polling Day on 30 Mar 2025.

The Writ of Ketupat Election was issued last Monday (3 Mar). Both KBP and KPP confirmed their candidates shortly after in a press conference.

I finally got to eat the daun sirih, which my grandfather was renowned for farming on Ubin, and it's pretty life-changing. But sirihs-ly though, you should at least try the daun sirih once in your life

I express my sincere appreciation to the Malay Language Department of Raffles Girls' School (RGS) for having me, and Firdaus of @oranglautsg, to share about our respective Orang Pulau identities with their students as part of the school's Mother Tongue Fortnight programme last Tuesday!

I'm heartened to learn that both students and staff have learned a new thing or two about Pulau Ubin and Pulau Semakau through the sharing, and why it's important for all of us to hold onto our Malay values in an ever modernising Singapore. God Willing, I look forward to more collaboration with the school (and others) in future as we amplify the voices of our islander communities.

This is my first preliminary mapping to show the spread of Malays/Orang Pulau on Pulau Ubin—which back at its peak could be found in Kampung Bahru, Kampung Sungei Bamap (now renamed Kg Mamam), Kampung Sungei Durian, Kampung Surau, Kampung Tanjong and Ketuk Batu (Pekan Ubin/Main Village).

Today, only small enclaves of inhabited Malay houses remain on the island in Kampung Sungei Durian, and one in Ketuk Batu. I wish to study this deeper in the near future, and may Allah SWT ease me in my efforts to map out the former Malay settlements on Pulau Ubin—as a reminder that Pulau Ubin has not always been a forested place, but a home to our community. Bismillah.

Crikey🐊! With crocodiles re-emerging in our waters (and headlines), I ask my mom for her thoughts on these reptilian reports—and how this affects our practices.

2024 was a year of mourning for the community, which saw the highest number of deaths in recent years. I reflect on the future of the dwindling Ubin Orang Pulau, and what it means to preserve our identity in today's Singapore.

2024 has been a year of growth for me—and that's because of you! Thank you for being a part of my 2024, and wishing all a Happy Holidays and Happy New Year 2025!

This is a photo of my great-grandmothers, sisters Aminah (left) and Siah (right) Binte Abdul Rahman—or more affectionately known as Tok Aminah and Tok Siah. Tok Aminah was my grandmother's mother, whereas Tok Siah was my grandfather's.

Tok Aminah resided in Kampung Sedili Besar, Johor, whereas Tok Siah was in Kampung Pahang in Pulau Tekong Besar, Singapore. This photograph was taken during one of their visits to Pulau Ubin in my grandparents' courtyard.

According to my mom, both Tok Aminah and Tok Siah enjoyed consuming daun sirih (betelnut leaves) together with kapur sirih (limestone paste), gambir (Uncaria gambir), and buah pinang (Areca catechu). Sometimes, the leaves and ingredients would be eaten as-is together, or they would be refined together using an apparatus known as 'gobek sirih'.

Tok Siah in particular was renowned for her 'sentil tembakau' —a traditional Malay method of consuming tobacco, where a pinch of shredded tobacco would be 'brushed' against the teeth and later tucked between the gums and cheek. Any liquid extracts, presumably a mixture of tobacco and saliva, would be spit out. My mom recalled how Tok Siah would tuck her sentil tembakau into random spots, like window panes, whenever it was time for her daily obligatory prayers, only to retrieve it and continue using it afterward. She was never without it.

Additionally, both sisters frequently wore terompah—a traditional wooden clog—while in their rumah dapur (kitchen annexes) or outside when they were collecting water from the well. My mom remembered hearing their steps making a distinct "ketak ketuk" sound on the ground.

Tok Aminah passed away in the mid-1970s in Kampung Sedili Besar, while Tok Siah passed away on 26 November 1985 in her fifth child's 3-room HDB flat in Serangoon, just briefly after their eviction from Pulau Tekong Besar to mainland Singapore.

40 years ago today, Singapore experienced one of the worst accidents in her early industrialisation era. My aunt, Maznah Binte Sulong (Awang Minyak)—whom I call Mak Cik—was aboard the 'Iron Parkgate' when a fire broke out and claimed the lives of 13 people. This is her story.

Absolutely awestruck to have received this beautiful watercolour painting from the talented Cikgu Yusoff Abdul Latiff (@yusofflatiff), who had also accompanied his masterpiece with a beautiful write-up of my family's stories. Thank you Cikgu Yusoff for your kind gift and words!

Came across these collages done up by my late uncle, Pak Teh, back in the 2000s while I was reorganising the family memorabilia.

In the first collage were my grandparents and their eleven children, arranged by birth order. Pak Teh also made another collage in 2007 to show those who were still alive, some paired with photos of their younger selves. Today, only 5 of them remain.

These collages prove testament to his love for his family, and his values of maintaining these social relationships with them, which I fondly remember him for. Pak Teh left us in February 2023, aged 68. May Allah SWT make his grave among those of the gardens of Paradise, Ameen.

If it's already growing quiet in 1995, God knows how deafening the silence at the Malay kampung is today, 29 years later 🥹

This Berita Minggu newspaper article by Dewani Abbas mentioned the dwindling population in Kampong Melayu — and featured two Kampung Sungei Durian residents, Encik Kadir Ghani and Cik Zaiton Salleh, who would now both be 67 and 74, respectively. Their houses no longer stand on the island today.

In 1995, Berita Minggu reported that the Parks and Recreation Department (now NParks) announced plans to develop parts of Pulau Ubin into rugged recreational areas. I translated this archival finding from Malay to English to document this piece of Ubin history.

This post is in tribute to the late Cik Rosmala Binte Jani, who shared with me this article, once again proving testament to her selfless support and generosity which will always be remembered.

The Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) was first established on western Pulau Ubin in 1967 and since then, has been instilling a sense of self-reliance and leadership to the many students who stepped through its campus doors.

It has been a great honour for me to have shared our Ubin Orang Pulau stories together with our friends in the OBS, who were eager to learn much more about the history of the island that we share. I hope the session has been a meaningful and insightful one for the team, and for this to be a beautiful start of more collaborations in future!

I was a little kid back then and my mom was just introducing me around to where she grew up, and now here I am conducting talks and walks to share this story and more with people from all walks of life. Alhamdulillah, may Allah ease my affairs in keeping our Ubin Orang Pulau identity alive and relevant in our ever-changing and rapidly modernising Singapore.

I'd like to thank the @ntu_ase for having me give a talk on "The Ubin Identity" last Thursday (24 Oct), at the request of their @ase.gsc !

I shared with the students on the history and challenges faced by the Ubin Orang Pulau in keeping their identities alive and relevant today, and I was heartened by the several questions raised by them after the talk. It shows that our youth are gaining interest in keeping our shared cultural heritage alive.

Afterwards, I was also given a tour around the ASE and I am inspired by the insightful works and studies conducted by their PhD students. Moving forward, there is merit for us to recognise and remember that our cultural and natural heritage are inseparable and we need to examine the symbiotic relationship that people have with their environment.
